Oakland Athletics could play at AT&T Park if new coliseum deal fails

Major League Baseball will reportedly help the Oakland Athletics play in AT&T Park, home of their cosstown-rival San Francisco Giants, if Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum officials can’t agree to a deal on a new short-term lease for the team.

According to sources that informed Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Athletics would move to AT&T Park for two years beginning next season.

Matier and Ross said that Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum authority has been pushing for a longer lease of five or eight years, but Major League Baseball is countering with a two-year proposition to give the A’s more flexibility in the near future as their owner mulls a prospective move to San Jose or elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see how the lease deal develops and what it will mean for the future of the Athletics. The fact that MLB has intervened will likely expedite the process.
